How to measure your roof
You only need a tape measure, a notepad, and a few minutes. Measure from the ground where you can — never climb a roof you are not comfortable on.

Sketch your roof from above
Draw the outline of your house as if you were looking straight down at it. Break it into simple rectangles and triangles — most roofs are just a few shapes put together.

Measure each shape
Measure the length and width of each rectangle in feet (walking the ground along the outside walls works fine). Multiply length by width for each one and add them together. That is your footprint area.

Adjust for the slope
A sloped roof has more surface than the footprint underneath it. Multiply your footprint by 1.1 for a low slope, 1.2 for a typical slope, and 1.3 for a steep slope you would not comfortably walk on.

Divide by 750
Take your adjusted roof area and divide it by 750. That is how many 5-gallon buckets you need for two coats. Round up — it is better to have a little extra than to run short mid-job.
